Practical preparation

A clearer first conversation.

You do not need a perfect legal brief to get in touch. A short account of your situation, the countries involved and any important dates is a useful beginning.

11 questions

Useful questions, before we speak.

What should I include in my first enquiry?

Describe the situation in a few sentences, identify the country or countries involved, and mention any important date. Add what you would like to discuss and your preferred language.

Do I need to send all my documents immediately?

A short description is enough to begin. You can mention the types of documents you have; detailed documents can follow when the firm requests them.

What should I clarify before proceeding?

Ask about the proposed scope of assistance, consultation arrangements, fees and the information the firm needs from you. Make a note of anything you would like explained.

Where can we meet?

Contact the firm to arrange a meeting online, in Dubai or at another mutually agreed location. The format and location are confirmed together before the meeting.

How can I frame a business or contract question?

Explain the business relationship and the decision you are considering. Note whether an agreement is being drafted, reviewed or disputed, and identify the parties, countries and timetable.

Corporate & commercial law

What helps explain a property or rental matter?

Identify the property, your role and the agreement involved. A short chronology, with the dates of any notices or existing proceedings, helps give the enquiry context.

Real estate & rental disputes

How can I prepare for a sensitive family discussion?

Start with the broad circumstances and the questions you wish to discuss. Mention the relevant countries and any existing proceedings. You can decide which details to raise during the consultation.

Family & inheritance

Does Hyam have experience with family or inheritance matters involving more than one country?

Yes. Hyam El Hachem has worked on family and inheritance cases encompassing more than one jurisdiction. In your first enquiry, identify the countries connected to the people, assets and documents, and mention any existing proceedings or deadlines. The proposed scope of assistance is discussed in light of those circumstances.

Family & inheritance

What if more than one country is involved?

Identify the countries connected to the people, companies, assets or proposed transaction. Mention the languages of important documents and any work already being carried out by other advisers.

International & cross-border matters

How should I summarise an existing disagreement?

Set out the main events in date order, the parties involved and the point of disagreement. Mention existing correspondence or proceedings and explain the outcome you would like to discuss.

Civil disputes & litigation

These resources help you prepare an enquiry. Advice on your particular circumstances begins with a consultation.
